Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom chose Gearhouse as a preferred Technical Supplier at the beginning of 2005 to manage and staff the venue; namely the Izulu Theatre, the Krakatoa Show bar and The Imbizo Conference Centre. The opening show for the 577-seater iZulu Theatre, "African Footprint" packed out the theatre in an astounding 8-month run.
The theatre has also hosted "Tap Dogs", "Umoja", and European duo "Phillipart and Anja" who amazed audiences with magic and illusions. All Sibaya venues have their regular annual visitors and amongst these are "Barry Hilton" and "Michael Naicker" who never fail to fill the theatre auditorium. More recently iZulu hosted the "S.A's Got Talent" audition and towards the end of the year TV personality, John Edwards - whose ability to contact those who have "passed over" has proven extremely with South African audiences - will be hosted here. This is not, however, a venue restricted only to theatre shows . It frequently - and very successfully - hosts the more formal conferences of over 500 pax, as well.
Gearhouse South Africa was involved with the initial rigging and fitting of the P.A System, proscenium and Lighting rig into this venue and has continued staffing the complex ever since Sibaya's Grand Opening . In-house technical specialists ,situated on the premises, oversee all technical, equipment maintenance and safety aspects for shows and events utilising the venue. Over time this resource has developed into a stand-alone service now known as INHOUSE Venue Technical Management, or IVTM. IVTM is one of the Gearhouse Group of companies and currently manages the technical aspects of no less than 20 key venues countrywide. IVTM's Theatre Manager at Sibaya, Janet Walsh, is always on hand to ensure that shows run professionally, smoothly and in full compliance with OSHACT rules and regulations, an aspect that it seems venues would prefer to outsource.
Sibaya's Imbizo Conference Centre is a 500pax Conference Venue, which has hosted many large conferences, Gala Dinners and Award ceremonies. The circular venue is ideal for hosting the more unusual events such as the currently hosted Mixed Martial Arts events, which is being recorded for television. It has also become a popular wedding venue, hosting an average of 4 weddings a month. Annual events hosted at Imbizo include "Waltons Back to School", "Chep Awards" and "The Yearling Sales", to name but a few.
The Krakatoa Night Club has become one of Durban's highlight venues and over weekends this 700 pax venue is generally operating to capacity. Fridays are Bhangra Evenings and Saturdays are Commercial Club Nights hosting guest D.J's from around the country like "Lady Lea", "Mimi K" and "Gareth Cliff". The Night Club has a large stage area, state-of-the-art sound and lighting rigs as well as 16 TV's and a 7m x 5m screen.
Krakatoa is yet another example of the versatility of the Sibaya complex. When it's not rocking to the sounds of "Denim", "Dr Victor", "Wonderboom" and more recently The Parlotones , who have sold out on two separate occasions, this venue is a popular corporate event venue and also functions as a Sports Bar during prominent competitions such as Super 14, Currie Cup, Formula one, Cricket, etc. During The Soccer World Cup two additional screens were installed to ensure that patrons could comfortably and clearly view the soccer matches from anywhere in the venue.
The INHOUSE VTM team at Sibaya are currently looking forward to a massive conference in October, which intends utilising all venues at Sibaya with full Day Conferences, Breakaways and Gala Dinners. "It's will undoubtedly be a challenge, and there is nothing we love more. " says IVTM'S Venue Technical Manager at Sibaya, Rafe Hayman. "When an event uses several diverse areas, the IVTM service comes into its own. We are so familiar with the complex and have well-established working relationships with the Sibaya team and each other, that it makes co-ordinating an event like this much smoother for everyone involved. "
